Today I had the opportunity to be the first person ever to do a particular Guinness World Records attempt. Back when I was training for the fastest mile on one foot while jumping rope, I thought that more people might be interested in trying a shorter version of that record (let’s be honest, who really wants to hop a mile on one foot, that’s just crazy talk). So I submitted a new world record idea and they accepted it. Today I met up with my old jump rope coach Mr. Berry and set the bar for this particular record.
It was a stormy day out and this record almost didn’t happen today. To let you in on a little secret, I was actually supposed to break 2 records today, but the weather went downhill right after we finished this one. Lightning was striking, thunder was clapping, merry leprechauns were dancing around their gold cauldrons under the rainbows. You get the picture. Thankfully, the rain didn’t start pouring right away so we were able to bounce out there and give this one a go. I decided to use an 8 foot rope for this one as I was going to be jumping fast and didn’t want to be turning any more rope than was necessary. I also was using a brand new jump rope that we will be selling in the store very soon (and it has been used to set a world record, wink wink). It is an awesome rope and I’m so glad they are being produced again after a multi-year absence.
I digress. This record was quite straightforward and involves hopping on one foot as fast as you can for 100 meters. I got down to my line and off we went. However…about 20 meters into the run (hop…skip…whatever) I was informed that the camera wasn’t rolling. Back I go to the starting line. Let’s try this again. Did a quick stretch and take number 2. This one went off without a hitch and I bounded my way down the straight away in a time of 23.78 seconds. Not bad for a 34 year old guy hopping on one leg. Want a fun (and I use that term quite loosely here) challenge, head down to your track and see how you do. Just remember to stretch your hip flexor when you’re done, otherwise you will be sore for the next couple of days.
